USEFUL INFORMATION

The local where is today Portimão, was denominated as “Portus Hannibalis”, Anibal port, whom was the owner of a fenician trade port.

In the Roman period, was baptized a s”Portus Magnum” because of the importance of its river and port.

The small village developed from the 12th century when the Arade river was no longer navigable and did not allow the commerce travelling to Silves and was now done in Portimão, for being so close to the ocean.

For centuries fishing was the main economical activity of the town, along with the fishing conserve industry.


Monuments:
- The Mother Church from the 5th century in gothic style;
- Jesuits College and its church from 17th century;
- The museum made from an ancient Conserve “Fabrica Feu” that tells the story of the town’s past connected to the fishing;
- Sta. Catharina Fortress in Praia da Rocha edified by King João II;
- Ferragudo on the opposite site of Portimão where is a castle edified by King João II today is a private residence.


Near Portimão:

Ferragudo (3 km): With its picturesque beautiful fishing harbour and beautiful beaches to discover such as Angrinha, Carneiros, Torrados, Infanta, Afurada, João Lopes, Molhe, Pintadinho and Praia Grande. In its coast is the Fortress of S. João do Arade. The small beautiful church of Our Lady Conception is worth to visit.

Alvor (7 km): Alvor know of its beach, being a small fishing village located near the river. The Mother church with its rich decorative portico. The town has a very pleasant pedestrian area near the harbour.

Silves (16 km): Xelb was the capital of the Moorish Kingdom in the Algarve, and this small town kept its arab influence until today. Not to miss a visit to its Castle, to the See and the Cross of Portugal. During Summer are held important feast such as the bear and the medieval fair worth of a visit.

Monchique Mountain (31 km): Monchique Mountain, where the most high point of the Algarve is situated - Foia with its 902 meters high allowing in sunshine days an amazing view all over the Region. This Mountain for being so close to the sea has a sub tropical climate, allowing the existence of various vegetation species.
